October Art Walk: Night of 1,000 Unicorns!

WALLINGFORD NEIGHBORHOOD ART WALK

NIGHT OF 1,000 UNICORNS

TONIGHT!

WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 3RD

6-9PM

The October Art Walk is the final Art Walk of the 2012 Season here in Wallingford and we’re planning a big, magical, fun send-off! Celebrate the magic and mystery of  Autumn with “Night of 1,000 Unicorns – A Night of Art, Music & Magic” on the streets of Wallingford on Wednesday, October 3rd, from 6-9PM.

The streets of Wallingford have been made magical with the addition of glittering stars, unicorns and lights! Come out tonight in costumes if you like – unicorns, dragons, faeries, magicians and more are welcome!

Among the artists and musicians lending their talents on this magical night will be:

Johnston Architects (100 NE Northlake Way) presents Portraits - A Series by artist Justin Kane Elder. “The painting process involves deconstruction and reassembly. I disassemble an image into basic geometric shapes and then rebuild it with those shapes. Each piece is an additive process formed by amassing different layers of media. Similar to the way a builder constructs a home, the portrait becomes the house built from this process. The final result is a dynamic visual display of color and form.”

At the Wallingford Center (1815 N 45th St.)  stage on the patio, the “dynamic duo” of Tallulah Assaf and Sylvia Bates who lead Catch the Cat will perform kid-friendly rock  at 5:30PMNate Jester – Ace of Illusions will fascinate you at 6:00PM and guitarist and vocalist Jeremy Serwer will make his musical magic at 7:00PM.

Windows Art Gallery (4131 Woodland Park Ave. N) is featuring Tom Talbott’s amazing photos. Tom has spent the past year photographing birds from Northern California to the Kenai Peninsula in Alaska. Special guest Valerie Piacenti will be singing with pianist Nick Moore at Window’s Art Gallery at around 7:00  Valerie leads a sound circle at Present Sense and has sung on Broadway and with the Pacific Northwest Ballet in Seattle and London. Nick is a local arranger/composer and keyboard performer, and was the keyboard chair for the “Almost Live Band.”

KERF Gallery (in Wallingford Center, 1815 N 45th St.)is featuring THE PICTURE SHOW with Paintings by Susan B. Pope and Sheila M. Scott, featuring an artist’s reception Wednesday, October 3, 2012 during the Wallingford Art Walk from 6 to 9 PM.  Show runs through October 31.

Susan Pope describes her work: “The process of creating a 3 dimensional illusion on 2 dimensional surface is magical to me. I am attracted to scenes and images in nature that capture, mood, lighting, texture and color so effectively that they transport the viewer to a place or time in their memory.”

Sheila Scott is a Seattle painter with a degree in Fine Art and Secondary Education from the University of Washington. Following a career as graphic artist, illustrator, and calligrapher in San Diego, California, she returned to Seattle and pursued the art of sumi-e, Asian ink painting. For the past five years she has studied shuji (Japanese calligraphy) with sensei Pam Lee to enhance her painting skills in both sumi-e and oils. The discipline and beauty of Asian calligraphy invites her to diligent practice and goal of ‘dancing with brush’.

Tea House Kuan Yin (1911 N 45th St.) is showing the works of Joe Lavely.

CUTZ Meridian (4515 Meridian Ave N) will feature the work of Christopher Thomas Raine, Reverse Glass Artist http://www.chrisraineartgallery.com/

Seattle Mosaic Arts (1325 N 46th St.) is proud to be showing the work of local wonderful mosaic artist, Kelley Knickerbocker. Kelley is an internationally recognized mosaic artist who travels all over the world teaching workshops as well as working on her own fine art and architectural mosaics. We are so lucky to have her in our backyard, to have her teach in our studio (upcoming workshop on Radical Dimensions in Glass Mosaics in October for those of you interested in getting this chance to study with her) and to have her hang her beautiful mosaics on our Gallery Wall! Also, for September even though it wasn’t an official “Art Walk” month, we are showing the stunning and deeply moving works by another local and famous mosaic artist, Jo Braun. Stop by before October to see this work too!

Caffe Appassionato Wallingford (1218 N 45th St.) will be showcasing the paintings of Holly Siberg for Octobers Art Walk. Not only is she a local Wallingford artist, but she is also a barista here at Caffe Appassionato! We are also going to have a special that night with $3 draft beers. Looking forward to another great Artwalk night!

H&R Block’s (1717 N 45th St)  artist is Tana Knight

Seamonster Lounge (2202 N. 45th St) will feature the photography of Laura Glitter. Also, SHELITA will perform from 7-8:30

CMA Gallery (4501 Interlake Ave N #9) Artist  Her current works were produced in the last two years by recycling her older, MFA thesis printed works, originally 8 feet tall. In order to progress to new work, the logical choice is to deconstruct the past work. She selects smaller scale compositions, rework the layers and surfaces by adding pieces, color, materials and making complex incisions.

The Grizzled Wizard (2317 N. 45th St) always features some of the best art in the neighborhood, but they are easy to overlook. For October, it’s Wallingford’s own Richard Lemmert.

For the month of October Chocolati on 45th Street (1716 N 45th St.) will be featuring photographer Daniel Lupastean from Radauti, Romania. Daniel primarily focuses on wild life and portrait photography, and will be featuring an array of his prized pieces in our cafe. To see previews of Daniel’s work, please visit http://www.dlsnapshot.com

All City Paint Supply (4112 Stone Way N.) is featuring Live Art with Hera. To see Hera performing her amazing artwork live, visit Uptown Espresso (2300 N. 45th St.) during Art Walk then stroll along the Art Walk path to All City Paint Supply to see her paintings for sale. While Hera is a classically trained artist, her portraits are layered with aerosol (spray) paints.  This graffiti art medium she chooses to embrace suits her art form well.  The colorful twist on photo realism is something that needs to be witnessed in person.

Wine World & Spirits (400 NE 45th St) is featuring the art of  Amanda Phipps, a fine artist based out of Seattle. Although she works in many mediums, her primary focus is abstract oil on canvas painting. Her work has been described as modern and graphic with dark undertones. Her paintings utilize depth, dramatic texture and vibrant colors to reflect her state of mind. To view additional works, please visit her online gallery at amandaphippsart.com.

Many artists will be featured throughout the neighborhood; Art Walkers are encouraged to visit us here often for updates and to download and print their Wallingford Art Walk Maps.

“Passage” is a survey of leading lines on the American landscape. Every glacier, wheel, and footfall that carved these lines bore a purpose, the sheer repetition branding a deeper promise of worth into the soil. Following these pathways, which by nature branch one to another, similarly connect us to past travelers while guiding us toward the futures we seek – each generation driven by the same prospects as the one before: change, destination, hopes we intend to plant at the end of the lines.

His work focuses on memory, loss, heroism, and  presenting digital work in an analog painting form. For June, KeyBank Wallingford celebrates its first anniversary of being in the Wallingford neighborhood.  We will be serving up refreshments and introducing our Featured Artist, Charles Moss, Jr.  His work “peers through the veil of a personal psyche upon a marred landscape, culpability residing everywhere. He received his BFA in Comprehensive Design from James Madison University. He was accepted into the Rhode Island School of Design to study architecture, but due to a scholarship and other financial concerns attended The Catholic University of America.  In addition to his studio art practice, he has worked as an architectural designer, art director in film, mural artist and art instructor.

Johnston Architects : Seattle artist Lisa Snow Lady has a BA in Art History and a BFA in painting from the University of Washington and has been a practicing artist for over 25 years. Employment as a graphic designer for 15 of these years contributed to her proficiency in layout and design and her ability to interact with clients to serve a variety of print media needs.  Lisa’s interest in botanical forms and recent education in ornamental horticulture inspire her mixed process paintings. In these works she layers paper, ink and paper to express fleeting beauty and renewal.  Her love of travel has taken her throughout western Europe with an extended stay in Holland where she studied the relationship between the arts and Christianity. She is inspired by the richness of Turkey and the natural beauty of to the Hawaiian Islands and yet finds inspiration in the sea and surroundings of her native Pacific Northwest. With watercolor she enjoys capturing landscape and architecture in a fresh and spontaneous way, later turning these sketches into acrylic paintings in her studio.

Lisa exhibits widely in solo, group and juried shows and is represented by SAM Gallery Rentals and Sales in Seattle, Museo in Langley, Washington, and Gallatin River Gallery in Montana. Lisa’s work is in the collections of Swedish Hospital, the University of Washington Medical Center, Evergreen Hospital and Safeco Corporation. Her art has twice been featured on the cover of theUniversity of Washington Botanic Gardens Bulletin and recently was selected for theArtist Series Label at Woodward Canyon Winery in Walla Walla, Washington.

Here’s her little blurb: My love of botanical form and education in ornamental horticulture inform my paintings and mixed media prints. In these works of richly textured layers of paper, ink and paint, flora serves as a metaphor for hope, rebirth, and renewal. Recent travels to Turkey, as well as a self-directed artist residency at Centrum in Port Townsend, Washington, have rekindled my interest in sense of place and a desire to explore landscape and architecture as well as botanical themes.

Julia’s : we are happy to exhibit Matt Bazemore’s colorful depictions of Ballard.  His work is vibrant, intricate, timeless and personal.  Please visit us at Julia’s for good eats and images of the town down the hill.

Assistance League Thrift Shop featured artist: Patricia Cook
Now 83 years old, Patricia finds watercolor a challenging medium.  She especially enjoys the opportunity to create an “atmospheric effect”, as reflected in the widely varied scenery and seasons of Southern Ontario.  In her European travels, Patricia was inspired to joyfully paint Portugal’s brilliant contrasting colors and local crafts, and France’s colorful history! Stop by the Assistance League Thrift Shop to view six of Patricia’s wonderful landscapes.  Each 16 x 20 matted and framed original watercolor may be acquired for $95.

Wine World & Spirits featured artist:  Miska
Miska was born Emily Salemann, a child of immigrants with German, Russian, and Yugoslavian heritage. Miska attended the University ofWashington Art School but is mostly a self taught painter, studying the works of the great modern masters daily. Miska has thus far been incrediblysuccessful. Her paintings are colorful and expressive. The blend of a Roman Catholic and Russian Greek Orthodox religious upbringing has manifested itself in her highly successful series of Madonna icons. Objective viewers find Asian,Latin, and even Native American features in her figures. Nevertheless, Miskacalls these figures her “one race” people. When told that her paintings are very “Picasso like”, she replies that her paintings are”happier” and her figures more recognizable. She uses gold, bronze, copper and pearl tones in her works that gives them an amazing reflectivequality. Her work is also rich in symbolism. Umbrellas, which are very common in her work, are symbols of the ‘shelter’ she talks about as well as symbolizing the northwest climate. The round circles found on the faces and chests of her figures are symbols of the blush of love and happiness. Flowers, water, mountains and the sun or the moon reflect her love of nature, not to mention her second love after painting…gardening! Her paintings also illustrate that she loves children, families, music and of course, coffee like most Seattle area natives do.
In August 2000, Miska was chosen by US Art magazine as one of 25 prominent artists to be featured and calls her an emerging success. Her painting, “Green Eyed Icon”, featured in the article, has since gained much attention. As one of her many Madonna icons, this work exemplifies the vibrance and color of her paintings, ultimately a symbol of love and happiness.  Miska’s work has been gracing the walls at Wine World since the store opened in Dec. 2010.  She is their featured artist for June’sWallingford Art Walk.

WINE WORLD is hosting an “after hours” party for all Art walk businesses and featured artists from 9:00-10:30 pm the evening of June 6th.  Swing by for a little vino and snack before heading home and mingle with all of the store owners and artists! We look forward to seeing you!

She has been the keynote speaker to benefit non-profit organizations in the US and Canada.  Her photography is shown at numerous art venues around Seattle. (www.greatoutdoors.com/published/a-cycling-odyssey-through-india)

Creative Music Adventures Gallery  ‘Carole d’Inverno is represented in Seattle, by Fetherston Gallery, and SAM Rental Gallery, and in New York by Tria  Gallery.’ As an artist,  I have many influences to garner from:  architecture, chemistry, story telling, nature, etc. Growing up in Europe, I was surrounded by old architecture and watched how time transforms and impacts all man made things.  Surfaces are distressed and colors are broken up in random patterns. Memory has distilled those images and now it all resurfaces in my work. I have been living in the North West for the last 23 years, and I have come to love how the weather covers and at the same time reveals the lusciousness of nature.   Here nature continuously and mysteriously transforms itself.  From my studio window I can look at the constant rearranging. It seeps into my work. It’s all alchemy to me.

Seattle Mosaic Arts will be hosting it’s annual Members Show. It is a great opportunity to see some the amazing and diverse mosaics coming out of our studio.

Cutz Meridian Salon will feature: Colleen Lambert
Through my art I try to create memorable images that ’work’. I enjoy the discipline and tradition of a representational painting style.” I am an artist from the Pacific Northwest and specialize in seascape portraits of this beautiful area, as well as elegant Floral work and vibrant, colorful still life.  I also am a pet portrait specialist and that work can be seen at AnimalZonePetPortraits.blogspot.com.  I was educated in Utah, California and Washington State where I now reside and work out of my studio in Lynnwood.  I am the recipient of several awards and have twice been featured as a cover artist for Signature Magazine for the Arts. Both private and corporate clients collect my art. I offer affordable art painted in a traditional style. I also participate regularly in art walks in Edmonds and other communities.  I offer comprehensive art classes in my studio for children and adults, beginners and intermediate students.  I happily say that my goal is to recreate the beauty that I observe and share that vision with other. If my art makes you happy, then I feel I’ve accomplished my goal.

The Artist for H&R Block will be Tana Knight.

Fremont Midwifery’s artist is Sarah Bylsma.  Having grown up in the Pacific Northwest my artwork comes largely out of stories and imagery from this wild, wooded land. Legends and animals from other northern countries also contribute to this theme, along with religious symbolism and underpinning.  Repetition and patterns are also a key element in my paintings. I think this has likely been a cross-pollination from my work as a graphic designer.

Dandelion Salon’s artist is Laura Cameron.  Combining personal iconography and universal mythology in various mediums, Laura’s paintings are portals for the contemplative spirit.  Most recently she has been focusing on paintings that evoke the re-emergence of the Sacred Feminine. Humanity is experiencing the reawakening of the Goddess in every aspect of life and on a global scale: from eruptions in nature to societal transformation. Much of the Goddess imagery is gleaned from ancient mythology and still has resonance for today as an archetypal force and guidepost to Transformation.  Laura Cameron lives and works in Seattle along the north side of Lake Union.  Northwest Visions Studio is her business.  To inquire about original works contact the artist at laura.cameron71@gmail.com.

All City Paint Supply is proud to welcome artists, Hera and others who will be painting live during the June 6th Art Walk.  Please come to 4112 Stone Way North 6-9PM to check them out.  Graffiti art has been around since the stone age when writing on walls was the only tool man had to create art.  Through thousands of years of evolution we find ourselves here today, doing the same thing early man did.
The art of graffiti is a combination of typography, realism, surrealism, experimentation and just about any other art form under the sun.
Today, graffiti art is a worldwide phenomenon that encompasses the globe and brings cultures together.  Anywhere you go in the world, letters and characters are communicating a certain tone from the artist.  It may be anger, playfulness, sadness, protest, happiness and even emotions never experienced.  There is no denying the art of graffiti.  Our goal is to educate young artists, provide tools for all to participate and advocate for public art space.
Keller Williams Greater Seattle: Artist Andrew Tsang.  We will have appetizers & sweets! Also The Castaways at 8-9.
