“An enchanted life has many moments when the heart is overwhelmed with beauty and the imagination is electrified by some haunting quality in the world or by a spirit or voice speaking from deep within a thing, a place, or a person. Enchantment may be”
– Henry Louis Mencken

Sultana A. Kaba graduated from Loyola University of Chicago with a degree in Fine Arts. She resides with her family in Bothell, Washington. Her passion is painting with her heart and she hopes that her paintings will evoke emotion in all who see it.

Wine World: Jeff Hengst. Our display of Jeff’s work will include some of his lush landscape/abstract paintings inspired by the verdant colors and pearlescent skies of Autumn in the Northwest. These works are lush and now grace many beautiful homes and businesses in the Seattle area including the Board Room for the Space Needle. We will also feature some of Jeff’s unique depictions of the fall harvest. Ever since Van Gogh’s sunflowers became famous, it has become a challenge for artists to invent their own particular vision of how to paint flowers, fruits and vegetables. Come see what Jeff has come up with. And come see how much the atmosphere of art can enhance the quality and experience of enjoying good wine.

Key Bank’s- featured artist for September is Sierra Logan. She recently moved her world headquarters from Florida to Seattle. She specializes in acrylic paintings and murals. Look forward to seeing a portion of her award-winning work when you visit KeyBank. She will be presenting her pieces personally. Refreshments to be provided.

Cutz Meridian- Kathy Liao was born in Taiwan. She received a BFA from University of Washington and an MFA in Painting from Boston University.”

“My creativity is fueled by direct observation. My work is driven by the fascination with perceptual and visual experience of light and space. I am constantly seeking new ways to create an illusionistic space through an exploration of of lines, shapes, color and through the visceral act of painting, scraping and collaging materials. I draw upon images of the people, objects, and places that I observe and identify with on a personal level. Specifically, I am drawn to experiences that tap into my cultural identity. These images and ideas are given substance and transformed through my painting and printmaking practices.

Fuel Coffee - Chris Thompson. We will also be holding a crafts sale at Fuel during the art walk.

Irwin’s - Andrew Detloff

Grizzled Wizard- David Gordon Williams

Dandelion Salon- Vanessa Steinhilb:

“My paintings can best be described as a collision of Pop Surrealism, Modernism and Illustration. Each painting contains multiple layers, each layer tells a story. I primarily work with oil paint. I never work with a model or photograph, preferring to work from distorted memories and precognitions. My process is intuitive. I do not pre-plan my paintings.”

KERF International - Kerf is back on the walk, will be in new SW crner of main floor, please drop in and see the show. Species on the Verge and Other Works Exhibit

Oasis Art Gallery- ‘Beneath the Surface’ Exhibition – August 3-October15

Featuring: Abstract textured photographs on canvas by Josh Martin, found object art and mixed-media by Wallingford resident Nancy Merrill, hand painted silk by Miranda Roberts, photographs by Forrest Sargent who is a young man with autism, and fun-loving mixed media art by Gwendolyn Worthy.

Images and more info at www.oasisinseattle.com/exhibitionsevents.html

Thrive- Sydney Palmer: These watercolor paintings emerged from my love of the glorious colors and quirky shapes of vegetables. Their unending variety never fails to bring cheer.

I am a local (Phinney Ridge) artist, and these images are all giclée prints of my original watercolor paintings. The word giclée comes from French and means”squirt, spray.” Giclée printing uses a high-resolution digital image and archival inks to produce excellent, highly nuanced art prints without having to make multiple color screens It is one of the newest forms of print-making.

Blue Star is featuring Cariña Booyens

Wine World – At Wine World, Warren Knapp’s giant Wine Bottle Paintings has been added to the revolving art on display in the store. Each painting is a 84″ high panel. He will have 5 bottles from his series adorning the walls of the largest wine store in the Northwest. Stop by 6 – 8pm and enjoy our complementary wine tasting while enjoying the art.

Seattle Mosaic Arts (www.seattlemosaicarts.com) continues with a very successful showing of Gretchen Fuller’s mosaics. Traditional art form meets pop-culture iconography in Gretchen’s intricate and whimsical mosaics. Gretchen creates functional and decorative pieces that are both playful and challenging. If you didn’t get a chance to see the show in August, it has been extended for the month of August.

“I print for the joy of it. I like to work with layers of color and imagery and with Solarplate etchings, which give me a way to integrate my photographs into monoprints for fresh interpretations. I enjoy applying a variety of techniques to let the story of each piece reveal itself as thework and I go along in the creative process. My inspirations come from visual memories of moments in time, shapes and colors playing with and against each other, and the simple pleasure of making marks on the plate. My prints are relief and intaglio, sometimes including both in the same monoprint. I make monotypes and also editions. My processes involve various ways of creating plates, depending on my mood and what a piece seems to want. I often incorporate collage elements in my work. I began working in oil-based printing inks but have switched to Akua inks, which are non-toxic, soy-based and produce rich colors. For etchings, I use the Solarplate process which is also non-toxic.”

“Recent changes in my life and awareness have brought me to my current work with perception.
Thrive Natural Family Medicine- Sydney Palmer
These watercolor paintings emerged from my love of the glorious colors and quirky shapes of vegetables.

Oasis Art Gallery- “Beyond Limitations” Recycled metal sculptures and yard art by Chris Lemmen, mosaics by local artist Debbie McLaughlin, paper and acrylic montages by Kim Weers, black and white Holga photography by Mark Olwick, and photographs on canvas accompanied by haiku by Alex Strazzanti.

“These paintings give you a look into my universe. In them I explore visions that spark when I practice yoga, meditate or am outside running. My intention is that my paintings share this world with you, and I invite you to come see them and be inspired.”

KeyBank – Jeanne Horsey
“Jeanne Horsey is a self-taught artist who developed her skills mostly by reading, observing, experimenting, and attending workshops. The raised line drawings that she did for blind students in her career as a special education materials specialist inspired her to try using heavy tin foil for Repousse drawing with acrylic. The raised dots you’ll see in her work are actually Braille dots done with a stylus.
Jeanne’s work includes large watercolors, repousse, note cards and repousse light switch covers. She continues to grow and expand in her use of both media.
She is a resident of University House and the mother of local renowned cartoonist Dave Horsey. Her works are exhibited at the University House Art Galas, and at the East Side and University Unitarian Church Galleries.
Ka’ Dunk
Music to soothe the savaged soul… so they say…Ka’ dunk is a Seattle based band that just started itself one day, spontaneously and organically, and then later pulled in its various, eclectic musicians to fulfill its visions. Collectively this group of musicians play in so many groups that it would silly to try to list here, and chances are are if you check out live music in Seattle, you have seen one or more of these musicians playing…some good music!
Think Zero 7 meets Radiohead meets SADE meets The Meters and Jackie Mittoo and Oh so relaxing…

Polyrhythmics Debut Album: “Labrador” to be released June 1st 2011

Polyrhythmics will release their long anticipated, fan funded, debut full length album on June 1st2011. A virtual rhythmic journey to all corners of the earth, “Labrador” incorporates all of the dynamic interplay, deep, percolating grooves, and melodic wizardry that audiences across the Northwest have latched onto during the band’s first year of live performances. Polyrhythmics’ early acclaim found them turning down some very well known, nationally acclaimed artists who contacted the band about guesting on their first album. “ We wanted to present the sound of the “Polyrhythmics” in a pure and honest format to our loyal fans and supporters who have packed the clubs and funded this recording through our kickstarter campaign”, says Ben Bloom guitarist, and manager for Polyrhthmics.

Polyrhythmics came together to record their now sold out EP in Jan of 2010. After just three rehearsals, the band entered the studio to record “live” in one room together. The result was a magical alchemy of dance grooves, jazz hooks and spontaneous improvisation that was dripping with originality, while paying homage to the great funk and soul dance bands of the late 60’s and early 70’s. Receiving radio play across the Great Northwest, the band soon found themselves performing to packed clubs and festival audiences. After a year of further developing their distinct yet tangible sound, the band launched a “kickstarter” campaign to fund the recording of their first full-length album. The resulting “Labrador” is a 9-song powerhouse full of brooding dance grooves, and catchy layered horn melodies. Recorded at Sleng Teng Studios in Bellingham, specifically for it’s vintage sound, the recording process was very similar to their approach on the EP: “live” in one room, just like the greats of yester-year. Drawing from modern influences such as the Budos Band and The Whitefield Brothers as well as their original influences like Fela Kuti, and James Brown, “Labrador” is a shining example of the chemistry between these 8 talented performers and why in a seemingly endless sea of new funk bands, Polyrhythmics is the band everyone is talking about.

After releasing “Labrador” with a free hometown show in Seattle, WA at Wallingford Center on June 1st, additional CD release shows are planned for: Olympia, WA on June 2nd @ The Eastside Club,Seattle, WA on June 25th @ The Hard Rock Café, Portland, OR on June 30th @ The Goodfoot, and inBellingham, WA on July 8th @ The Boundary Bay Brewery.

Polyrhythmics will continue to tour regionally throughout the summer in support of the new album, and plan to head back into the studio in late fall.

The last few months we’ve been busy creating new signage for our businesses. Today we will be delivering hot new sandwich boards to all businesses participating in Art Walk. These sandwich boards will make it easier for patron to recognize participating businesses along the Art Walk route. Tara and SeaMonster bartender Johnnie Klug worked hard to construct the boards, the participants of the Wallingford House painted the signs in chalk board paint and bright orange, to give the signs visablibity. Big thanks to the Wallingford Hose for their help! Www.wallingfordhouse.org Page Eaton (Art Walks Graphic Designer) et al., completed their construction and used stencils to tag them as Wallingford Art Walk signs.
